East Shallowford Farm sits in the wide West Webburn valley, surrounded by the hills and moorland of Dartmoor National Park. It is quiet in a way that is increasingly hard to find. The kind of quiet where you notice the birdsong, count the stars and wake up to the sound of animals rather than traffic.
Whether you're looking for a weekend away with friends, a family adventure, a group celebration or simply somewhere to use as a base for exploring Dartmoor, Shallowford offers something genuinely different from a hotel or holiday cottage. This is a real working farm - and you're welcome to be part of it.
A stunning new barn conversion completed in 2022, retaining original Dartmoor granite features throughout. Light, warm and thoughtfully designed, the barn sleeps up to 21 people across five en-suite bedrooms, sleeping 3, 4, 6, 6 and 2. There is a large dining room, a spacious lounge with an original cobbled floor, a well-equipped kitchen and a lift for accessibility. Groups of 10 or more have exclusive use of the barn.
The farmhouse itself forms part of a Grade II listed curtilage and has been welcoming guests for decades. With a huge roaring fireplace, a quirky granite staircase, four bedrooms with modernised bathrooms and solid wooden bunk beds, it's warm, characterful and unmistakably Shallowford. Groups of 10 or more have exclusive use of the guest wing, which includes a kitchen, dining room, sitting room, boot room and downstairs toilet.
Staying at Shallowford means waking up to a working farm - and that's precisely the point.
Guests are warmly invited to join the morning animal feed at 8am. It's not compulsory, of course. But lots of people find themselves pulling on their wellies and heading out anyway.
Beyond the morning feed, the farm and its surroundings offer everything you need for a genuinely restorative stay. Walk straight out onto the moor from the front gate. Follow the West Webburn river through the valley. Sit in the courtyard with a cup of tea and watch the farm go about its business. In the evenings, gather around the fireplace in the farmhouse and let the day unwind slowly.
Being a busy working farm, there is sometimes the sound of animals, children and machinery drifting across the yard. We think that's part of the charm. This is not a sanitised rural retreat - it's a real place, doing real things.
And for most people who come here, that's exactly what they were looking for.
"We loved our stay. The countryside is absolutely stunning and it's so peaceful. We had an amazing time."
